Join our Community

At the University of Essex, there is an incredible creative community. From Filmmakers to Writers, Photographers to radio presenters, students are producing all kinds of innovative works. Rebel exists to provide a platform for this community, give support to those who need it, and connect them to an audience of 14 000 students.

Members are the heart and soul of what Rebel does. We run tons of workshops and training for our members to develop their skills. We run special events aimed at giving members more experience with writing articles, taking photos, creating videos, being part of live broadcasts/webcasts, and presenting and producing radio shows.

Below are some of the ways you can get involved as a Rebel member, because we’re always looking for new creators to make content and find innovative ways to create new media.

These opportunities are zero commitment if you want them to be, meaning that you can do as much or as little as you like, and shape tasks and projects around your own schedule. But by the same token, if you want to learn as much as you can and get the most out of what we have to offer, there are so many opportunities to make that happen, and this is where that journey begins.

These are the opportunities that are open to every member of Rebel. To get involved in these open roles, email

Committee  Roles

Rebel is run by students and to make sure the best content is always accessible for the community, Rebel needs a good amount of people to keep the engine running. Rebel runs a number of projects every week and the key to creating amazing content that is relevant to our audience is good communication and coordination.

The committee members are the people who make Rebel happen, who make the opportunities for our members happen, and who push it to the next level in our Editorial, Video, Radio and Marketing teams. Rebel is still young and has a long way to go, and you can be a part of that journey. If you’re on the committee, you are shaping the future of Student Media at Essex.

There are a lot of roles available here, and that’s normal. Just like societies and sports clubs, the committee changes every year to keep Rebel relevant and open to all. But Rebel has a huge committee with over 60 positions available. If you want to be a part of our committee, there is most definitely a role available for you here.
