Mr Russell had represented the town for 18 years until his defeat by the Conservatives at the 2015 General Election.

He said: “I was not going to stand in the General Election planned for 2020, but with the General Election brought forward by three years I have been under a lot of pressure to stand again in six weeks’ time.

“I have given the matter considerable thought. My wife has said she will back me, as she has always done previously for which I am immensely grateful, and pledges of support and encouragement have come from friends and party members.”

Since his defeat at the 2015 General Election, Mr Russell has held the honorary, non-political position of High Steward of Colchester, which involves several civic engagements across the year. He has therefore withdrawn from any duties associated with the role which may occur during the General Election period.

The election is being held on 8th June after being called by Theresa May in an attempt to “bring certainty, stability and strong leadership after the EU Referendum”.
